Tomeu
The extraordinary skill of blowing glass and working it into beautiful objects constitutes one of the most precious art forms of our artistic tradition.
Since 1800 in the glass-making ovens of Tomeu’s family and through successive generations, the artisans and master glassmakers have been at work, the air of their lungs and the agility of their hands create the pieces whose shapes, transparencies and reflections still today seduce us. Each piece is unique, so none is identical to the other. Any bubble irregularity or asymmetry are the characteristics of hand-blown glass and give these works of art their particular charm.
Shanti
Shanti is a young man living on the Indonesian island of Sumatra renowned for sumptuous handmade crafts. He learned the art of weaving as a small boy spending countless hours alongside his father and absorbing the skills and manual dexterity needed to become a master basket weaver. Now his skill is so admired he is able to employ and pass his skills to seven local artisans in a small workshop he runs from home near Jambi in the Barisian Mountains. They only use locally sourced eco friendly bamboo, rattan, reeds and palm leaf ribs before beginning the painstaking and demanding process. Sometimes it takes hours to finish a single basket but it’s certainly worth the time and effort. Every basket is a unique piece of art and subtle variations in style show the skill of its creator. With help from Only Summer, these artisans will be able to reach the global market, thereby helping the sales of handmade products and improving the livelihoods of the artisans and their families.
Antonia
Throughout the Spanish region of Murcia little remains of the tradition crafts that once flourished here, such as the ancient skill of working with esparto grass native to Spain and used to produce fabulous carpets and mats. Over a century ago it gave work to hundreds of people but sadly no longer. However Only Summer has found a small workshop in Blanca, in the heart of the Ricote Valley. It’s one of the last strongholds of esparto grass carpets throughout Spain. Here with the help of her son Jose, Antonia works tirelessly and refuses to let the traditions and skills die and be forgotten. To save the struggling business they decided to focus only on handmade esparto, corn husk and sisal carpets. They use a complex process of crushed and sulfurized esparto grass that gives a unique and special charm. Antonia and Jose have brought creativity and good taste to their own and traditional designs with a rich use of colour: pinks, blues, turquoises and yellows, that give a vibrancy to traditional carpets.Antonia’s son José says that "the range of colors is very varied,18 shades, and the same design, depending on the combination of colors, sizes, shapes, etc., makes infinite creations possible". The result is carpets of cheerful colours, rich in history, but with new ideas.
Lamina
In Senegal, basket weaving is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. It’s a way for women in rural villages to generate a little extra income for their children and family. Lamina is one of the many women creating these beautiful baskets by hand. Sometimes it takes her days to finish a complex design, but she always works with her all her heart and lots of joy. Beside Lamina there are many other artisans creating small and colorful chairs, footstools and the traditional basket for carrying fish called a creel. Since the day we had our idea for Only Summer, we have been inspired by these skillful artisans, both men and women. Seeing them at the market, weaving away with their children beside them underneath a baobab, there is a unique sense of community in their dedication and joy. With their work we want to bring color and individuality into contemporary houses and allowing our artisans to provide their families with food, shelter, education and healthcare – leading to a better life. Most importantly, we want to grow the network of artisans we work with and provide more job opportunities for people in the rural areas of Senegal.
